Gum disease is an inflammation or infection of the gums that can progress to affect the bone that surrounds and supports your teeth.

Gum disease affects most people at some time in their lives and being mostly painless often goes unnoticed. Because gum disease can lead to receding gums and the loss of teeth, it’s really important to be aware of the signs and symptoms.

The two stages of gum disease

Along the spectrum of periodontal disease (gum disease), gingivitis is the early stages which causes inflammation of the gums. As it can develop in to periodontitis it should be prevented or treated early.

Periodontitis can develop from gingivitis and is at the more serious and damaging end of the gum disease spectrum. Permanent damage to the gums and soft tissue, as well as loss of teeth, are common outcomes.
